Fort Popham

For our Sunday afternoon drive, we ventured out to the end of the peninsula we live on to the mouth of the Kennebec River.  If I remember right, this town is called Popham. Doesn't it look classically Atlantic with the mist?

We explored Fort Popham, which was constructed during the Civil War to guard the mouth of the Kennebec River so that enemies couldn't get up the river to Bath, which was a big shipbuilding site, just as it is now.

The old fort is full of interesting architecture, limestone formations, and creepy corners.  Of course, we explored every dark, creepy space we could find.

We didn't quite make it to the Atlantic Ocean on this trip, but this is pretty close.  There were waves, so I would say that this counts as a beach.

There are so many interesting things to see within a few miles of our house!  We can't wait to see what we will find on our next excursion into midcoast Maine.
